Mourning and hope, for our loved ones and our wounded planet, are at the heart of this mixed-program of contemporary dance featuring new creations by local choreographers Olivia Shaffer and Kelly McInnes.
Senescence is a daughter’s personal reflection into caregiving for her father and his struggle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia. Olivia Shaffer dives into movement, text, and music, in collaboration with composer Alex Mah, to confront the inevitable failures in planning for our own mortality.
In Blue Space Kelly McInnes tackles decay and destruction on a large scale, the illness and paralysis that plagues humanity: our inability to properly care for the life-giving planet we inhabit. McInnes invites us to observe and value the universe that exists inside and outside ourselves, exploring our intrinsic connection to water.
New Works gratefully and respectfully acknowledges that this event takes place on the ancestral, and unceded Indigenous territories of the ʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations.
