2024-25 Season Announcement

Welcome to New Works’ 2024-25 Season!

New Works was built on relationships. Relationships cultivated and developed over time. Creative relationships with audiences and artists, volunteers and supporters, community partners and staff, each of which generate meaningful, impactful artistic encounters.

Last year we celebrated these relationships with special 30th anniversary programming. As we enter our fourth decade, the 24-25 season celebrates old friends, like Montreal based Tentacle Tribe and the Cultch – a throwback to our last presentation before the pandemic struck; and it marks the beginning of new associations as we support a world premiere from contemporary Kathak artist Gaurav Bhatti. Plus a host of residencies, studio showings, and other presentations – both familiar and fresh!

“As we forge ahead into another season, I can't help but continue to feel fascination for all the artists we have the privilege to witness, interact with and support in our community. I see the commitment of artists constantly showing up; toiling away at their craft, creating with conviction and inspiring their colleagues and audiences with their creativity. From receiving applications to conversing with artists, it is an absolute privilege to do what we do. This season, New Works is once again asking what is possible as it features and supports a diverse range of artists across all of our programs. We hold dear our existing and new relationships. And we hope to meet you or see you once again this season.”

Amber Barton, Programming Director

Mark your calendars; there is something exciting for everyone coming up this season.

Our presentation series kicks off this summer with the return of All Over The Map (July 21, August 11) to Granville Island, featuring the work of 8 exceptional artists sharing practices from Kathak to Peruvian and more. These are great free, afternoon outdoor performances for the whole family to enjoy.

Coinciding with the kick off of BC Culture Days, Pop Up Dances (September 20-22) brings three days of joyful, site-specific dance to unexpected spaces across Granville Island and the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library. Immerse yourself in the urban landscape and discover new artists and places through a full Pop Up Dances Festival.

As the fall picks up and the rain begins, we head into the theatre for our ticketed presentation series; in partnership with The Cultch we’re thrilled to bring back Montreal’s Tentacle Tribe (October 23-27) with their latest work – Prism. In January we look forward to growing our partnership with PuSh International Performing Arts Festival to present Andrea Peña & ArtistsBOGOTÁ (January 30, February 1), and in March we will partner with The Dance Centre to present the world premiere of Gaurav Bhatti’s (March 28-29) newest work. Shows are ticketed independently and more information can be found on the respective webpage of each.

Our resident artist series continues, this season featuring exciting new work from three exceptional artists. This summer, Tin Gamboa came into the studio for a two week creation residency in partnership with Out Innerspace where she explored and expanded on creative research. In October danielle Mackenzie Long will explore and share an XR new work-in-progress at the Roundhouse Performance Centre, and in January, Foolish Operations jumps into the theatre to continue researching their newest work for very young audiences. More information about public studio showings will be announced on our website as residencies near.

Our educational and support programs continue in exciting ways as we build upon new and existing partnerships. Find more information and join us for Cohort, NWXR, Share Dance, In Practice, Help Desk, and various special Workshops throughout the season. All programs are free or low cost to attend, and we would love to see you there.

Of course, the season would not be complete without a special project; this Fall we look forward to partnering with The Dance Centre and Plastic Orchid Factory to present Dance In Vancouver - Sunday Sampler (November 24). As part of this biannual celebration, showcase, and marketplace, Sunday Sampler will include a mix of excerpts by various artists alongside ‘pitch your friend’ pitch series. Keep an eye out as artists are announcenced and be sure to reserve your spot, this is one not to be missed!

We look forward to seeing all of your friendly faces throughout the season, and we hope you’ll bring along some of your friends to join the New Works community too!
